Spring has sprung and have we got some very cool stuff lined up for the last 16 weeks of the year (bet that scared you, where has the year gone??)

Coming up this month and next are all those awesome tours mentioned last week, Testament, Carcass, Pig Destroyer and Meshuggah and on the home listening front for September we have got new albums from Motorhead and Iced Earth on the racks from this week and new music from Sonic Syndicate, Evergrey, Metal Church, and All Shall Perish too. It just keeps steamrolling on eh!!

METAL CHURCH "THIS PRESENT WASTELAND"

Metal Church were founded in the early Eighties in Seattle. Celebrated as outstanding talents, the band signed a recording deal in the very early stages of their career and released their debut, ‘Metal Church’ in 1984, an offering praised to the skies by the press. “The band’s amazing musicality is an absolute highlight in itself. This album will always be a classic of American straight-ahead heavy metal.” With several great albums in between the brilliant ‘The Weight Of The World’ arrived in 2004, Metal Church introducing their new vocalist Ronny Munroe to the public.

Respectfully characterized by the music press as “Rob Halford meets Dio”, he immediately catapulted the band to a new level in terms of vocals and content. Now here we are with 2008’s masterpiece ‘This Present Wasteland’ a steamroller of Powerful, Traditional US METAL and bound to be one of their strongest ever releases!

ULI JON ROTH "UNDER A DARK SKY"

In the early 1970s, Roth formed a band called Dawn Road. In 1973 he temporarily joined Scorpions, replacing guitarist Michael Schenker (brother of Scorpions guitarist Rudolf) who had left to join UFO. Michael had a reputation as a highly skilled technical player; Scorpions disbanded after he left the group. The "new" Scorpions were, in effect, a merger between the four members of Dawn Road, (Uli Jon Roth, Achim Kirschning, Francis Buchholz, Jürgen Rosenthal) and the two remaining Scorpions members, Rudolf Schenker and Klaus Meine.[1] During his tenure as lead guitarist and a main songwriter for the Scorpions, the band released five very influential records, including the live album Tokyo Tapes, which sold nearly one million copies and went gold in several countries.

Some later Scorpions releases with Roth began to exhibit a stylistic split in songwriting. Roth-composed songs were influenced by classical music and Jimi Hendrix, but songs involving Rudolph Schenker as composer leaned towards straight hard rock and pop hard rock. This split reflected Roth's growing dissatisfaction with his role in the band. He began investigating spiritually oriented subjects in his private life, like his influence Jimi Hendrix did towards the latter half of his career. Roth left the Scorpions in 1978.

Roth formed his own band named Electric Sun which released three albums. The first, Earthquake (1979), was dedicated to the spirit of Jimi Hendrix and featured cover art by artist Monika Danneman, Jimi Hendrix's former girlfriend who had been with him when he died in 1970, and who became Roth's partner afterwards. A second album released two years later, Fire Wind (1981), was dedicated to Anwar el-Sadat (the assassinated President of Egypt who had tried to make peace in the Middle East), featured a song called "Enola Gay" which was about the atomic bombing of Japan, and cover art by Monika Dannemann.
In the 1980's, Roth commissioned construction of custom guitars with additional frets (32). He called them Sky guitars and used them on his last Electric Sun album Beyond the Astral Skies (which was dedicated to Martin Luther-King and to Roth's fans), released in 1985. Since then, Roth entered a new phase of creative work, composing a.o. four symphonies and two concertos, and sometimes performing with symphony orchestras throughout Europe.

The untimely death of Roth's girlfriend and spiritual partner Monika Danneman April 5 1996 was reported a suicide; she had just lost a legal battle with a former Hendrix girlfriend and was due to be described in a book about the last days of Hendrix in a negative light. Roth appeared in concert at Castle Donington in 2001 with original Scorpions lead guitarist Michael Schenker, and critics noted the healthy appearance of Roth and his mastery of his material.
On June 2, 2007 at the Rock am Ring festival in Germany, Roth joined The Smashing Pumpkins on stage for their epic closing song "Gossamer". He made another appearance with the Pumpkins upon their return to Germany on February 26, 2008.

According to Roth's official site he is currently working on a new full-length studio album, which is to be released before the summer. The title of the album will be "Under A Dark Sky". This is going to be the first official release in the long-awaited series of Symphonic Legends, which is a cycle of music written by Uli for his all-encompassing Sky of Avalon project.

NIGHT RANGER - ROCKIN’ SHIBUYA 2007

CROWN OF THORNS - FAITH

Releasing their now legendary self titled debut album in April 1994, Crown Of Thorns have steadily become one of the favourite bands of the Melodic Rock resurgence in the late nineties. With amazing albums such as “Breakthrough”, “Lost Cathedral”, "Destiny Unknown and “Karma” and relentless touring that brought them to play in support of Bon Jovi and Van Halen for three months throughout all of Europe, Crown of Thorns remain one of the leading bands of the Melodic Hard Rock genre.

Formed at the dawn of the 90’s by former Plasmatics and songwriter for KISS, Ramones, Lionel Ritchie, John Waite and many others, Jean Beauvoir with Tony Thompson of Chic and The Powerstation, Micki Free of Shalamar and top session bassist Michael Paige, Crown Of Thorns underwent some personnel changes during the early years, with Tommy Lafferty taking place on guitar and Hawk Lopez on drums.

Jean collaborated for the production of the new album with Bob Clearmountain (Bryan Adams, Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi) and the result is probably the best sounding CoT album ever! “Faith” is an album that brings back the trademark Crown of Thorns sound as defined in the debut album and “Lost Cathedral”, still keeping intact all the elements of infectious guitar riffs, soaring hooklines and great melodies. BOB CATLEY – IMMORTAL

Best known as the singer of British Rock legends MAGNUM, Bob Catley started his solo career in 1998 with the release of the highly acclaimed album “The Tower” written and produced by TEN leader Gary Hughes, who also wrote and produced the two following records “Legends” and “Middle Earth”.

Closing the chapter on the collaboration with Hughes, Bob Catley chose to pursue a heavier direction leaning more towards the sound of Rainbow and Dio with his latest releases “When Empires Burn” (with songs written by the other TEN member Paul Hodson) and “Spirit of Man” (with songs contributed by longtime Bob Catley band guitarist Vince O`Regan and another two British songwriters Dave Thompson and Paul Uttley).

For his brand new studio album Bob has again moved on and selected songs written on purpose by the Swedish axeman Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Allen/Lande, Starbreaker). The album production and recording happened in Karlsruhe, Germany under the supervision of Pink Cream 69’s Dennis Ward (producer of Angra, House of Lords, Edenbridge, Sunstorm, Place Vendome etc) . Dennis cared for the bass and guitar parts, with drums handled by Dirk Bruineberg (Elegy) and keyboards provided by Karlsson himself. Magnus Karlsson plays lead guitars on “End of the World” and the other PC 69’s member Uwe Reitenauer also contributed with a few solos.

Motörhead – the name alone stands on it’s own and the band has developed according to their own rules. Fans – new and old – are bowing to and worshipping Motörhead for over 30 years of Rock and Roll. A band that has never sacrificed anything and has always remained true to what they are.

Lemmy is the undisputed head. Gruff and with the typical British humor (despite calling L.A. his home for more than 18 years by now). Phil Campbell, who has been with the band since 1984, is like a fine red wine – he’s even getting better each year while Mikkey Dee ( with the band since 1992) is described by Lemmy as follows: ‘ Mikkey is fantastic, he’s 100% sure of himself, and knows he’s the best drummer in the world. The infamous ‘ We Are Motörhead And Play Rock’n Roll’ Trio is still a power-horse that won’t slow down. More and more people are enthralled by their music and personalities.
Motörhead is without a doubt one of the most respected rock bands worldwide and made it clear to everyone when they finally received a well deserved Grammy in 2005.

The album was again produced by Cameron Webb and the recording took place at FooFighter Dave Grohl’s 606 studios in Los Angeles.
