BIOHAZARD Are Back! The re-union album recorded with the original line up!

Finally platinum selling NYHC legends Biohazard are back with a new record! Their self-titled comeback album is not only the first in six years but also marks the first to feature the original line-up in 14 years. No doubt, Billy Graziadei and the boys stepped up to their glory days by recording what Biohazard does best: Mixing the sheer aggression of real hardcore with the brutality of metal riffing, injecting a slight hip hop edge and of course having a few surprises up their sleeves. If this album would have been released in the the 90’s it definitely would now be talked as a milestone of the genre.

Black Label Society: Zakk Wylde (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, mini-Moog synthesizer, talk box, voice box, bass guitar); Barry "Lord" Conley (piano, synthesizer, mini-Moog synthesizer); Harry Conley, Eddie Mapp (mini-Moog synthesizer); James Lomenzo (bass guitar); Craig Nunemacher (drums).

Recording information: 2005. Zakk Wylde's Artemis Records debut, MAFIA, is not only his seventh album since founding Black Label Society in 1998, but part of a solo career that's a sideline to playing guitar for Ozzy Osbourne. Wylde's workload apparently hasn't negatively affected his own sound. If anything, his playing on this sixth Black Label Society studio project is as good as it's ever been.
Equally impressive are Wylde's vocals, which have evolved into a mix of musical godfather Ozzy and late Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley. His voice works splendidly when coupled with the skull-crushing riffs and dirge-like rumble of BLS songs like the unbelievably heavy opener, "Fire It Up," and the post-grunge tour de force "What's in You." And unlike most of his hard-rocking brethren, Wylde isn't averse to in-studio tinkering. The piano accompaniment and spry, acoustic-guitar solos incorporated into the epic "Dirt on the Grave" make it an exemplary track. Topicality also plays a role in the creative process, be it the assault on corruption throughout the maelstrom of "Suicide Messiah" or the heartfelt sendoff given to Wylde's murdered friend Dimebag Darrell in the shape of the poignant "In This River."

Bridge Over Troubled Water
Quick, name the guitarist whose previous albums have sold more than Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and AC/DC combined. Hint: It’s not Zakk Wylde.
“Let’s just tell everyone that anyway,” says the guitarist, before launching into a long conversation about other small white lies he’d like stated as fact (including his bench press and a certain anatomy size).

Zakk’s one funny dude, but take the guy seriously: he’s also a phenomenally successful musician and a certified metal deity (see below). For over 20 years he served as Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist, a collaboration that produced a string of multi-platinum albums, including Osbourne’s biggest selling album No More Tears (Wylde wrote all of the music) and Ozzmosis. His band, Black Label Society, is on the verge of releasing its eighth (and best) studio album, Order of the Black, a cacophony of heavy riffing, heartfelt ballads and thunderous metal. After years as a mainstay on Ozzfest (including this year!), Black Label is about to embark on its own headlining festival tour, entitled The Black Label Berzerkus. And, in the last few months, Wylde was anointed both a Golden God by Metal Hammer and a Best Guitarist Award by Revolver, two metal bibles essentially bestowing their highest honor on a guy who hasn’t released new material in four years. And hey, Wylde’s even got his own custom guitar lines for Gibson and Epiphone, which includes the signature Gibson Les Paul with a bulls-eye graphic that you may have seen used recently by none other than…Justin Bieber guitarist Dan Kanter*.

That’s an impressive resume right there, whether it includes out-selling Zeppelin and the Stones or not (note: it doesn’t). The back story to that is even nuttier – and the stuff of heavy metal legend. Born and raised in New Jersey, Wylde picked up the guitar at 14 and started playing in a few local bands during and after high school, earning his stripes in a group called Zyris and making ends meet in a series of menial jobs (including gas station attendant). A fortuitous run-in with a rock photographer helped land Wylde an audition with Ozzy Osbourne, who was looking for a new guitarist. Wylde couldn’t believe he got the gig; the 20-year old soon found out he was joining the ranks of Tony Iommi, Randy Rhoads and Jake E. Lee as Ozzy’s right hand man.

Several gigantic albums and multiple stadium tours followed. During his off-time, Wylde completed a solo record, an album under the name Pride & Glory, and, in 1999, formed his own group, Black Label Society, which went on to earn its own fervent fanbase (known as the Berzerkers) over the course of eight albums

This, you pretty much know…but the last twelve months have seen Wylde’s life radically altered. First, doctors discovered blood clots in his leg. “The doc was like, ‘you have, what, a drink a day?’ Six? 12? A case?’ I’m like, ‘It’s a liquid diet,’” says Wylde, laughing. “I mean, I’d drink beer while lifting weights. That’s Black Label Society style for you right there. But the doc told me if I kept this up, I’d be dead by the time I was 50. So I stopped drinking. No big deal.”

Then, the second bomb dropped. Osbourne, Wylde’s boss and mentor since 1988, announced he was looking for a new guitarist. “I heard that, and to me, hey, the glass was half-full,” he says. “It’s like, thanks for letting me be there for 23 years! I’ll always cherish that. What more could Ozzy do for me at this point?” As if to prove a lack of animosity, Wylde and BLS will perform on this summer’s Ozzfest tour before heading out on their own. “I look at it this way: instead of 24-7, Black Label Society is now my life 25-8,” he says.

For the new Black Label Society record, Wylde recorded with his bandmate JD DeServio and new drummer Will Hunt in his home studio, dubbed the Black Label Bunker. “I gutted the whole place, made it state-of-the-art, mixed and recorded there – the whole thing came out slammin’,” he says, adding that he plans to bring in other bands to record there for his own record label, Panworkz.

Order of the Black, the band’s eighth album, isn’t a radical departure from the band’s previous work – it’s simply a refinement. There are brutal riffs (“Crazy Horse”), Southern doom (“Southern Dissolution”), gentle contemplation (the piano ballads “Darkest Days” and “Time Waits for No One”) and epic thrash (“Godspeed Hellbound”). The album’s first single, “Parade of the Dead,” meanwhile, features some vintage shredding from Wylde (or, as one very satisfied Berzerker posted online, “It’s a bit Randy Rhoads-ian. I love it!”)…as well as one wicked, bad-ass groove.

While tracks like “Darkest Days” and “Shallow Grave” may portend a darker, more personal record, Wylde doesn’t necessarily see the album going one particular direction, be it heavier, moodier or lighter. “It’s just whatever the songs are,” says Wylde. “I hate bands who are like ‘This is our heaviest yet’…so it’s just picking and screaming now? Or, ‘this is the fastest guitar playing I’ve ever done.’ Then you’re listening to notes. My favorite artists – Zeppelin, Sabbath, Elton John – the whole thing is songs. Back in Black wasn’t the heaviest or most vulgar AC/DC album – it has the best songs.”

Wylde will head out on the road later this year on the inaugural Berzerkus tour, featuring a number of heavy bands he’s befriended over the years, including Clutch, Children of Bodom and 2cents. “I’m always running into them, and I thought it would be an awesome excuse to get together,” he says. “It’s going to be a tour of insanity, drunkenness (well, not for me) and dysfunction, that’s for sure.”

So with a new album, headlining package tour and two of metal’s biggest accolades, what’s next for the guitarist? “Chinese Democracy 2,” he says. “What Axl did was nothing. I was gone for four years before this album, and suddenly I’m a Golden God and metal’s Best Guitarist. Next time I’m gonna go away for 15 years and come back with a Pulitzer and a Nobel Peace Prize.”

* FYI, Wylde only has admiration for Bieber and his guitarist, Dan Kanter. “Right now, I think a bunch of people see me on stage and think I’m playing a Dan Kanter guitar,” he says, laughing. “All I know is, right after that photo came out of him with that guitar, our Twitter feed went from 20,000 to like 18 million. We’re bringing a lot of young chicks into the dark side.”

Legendary Grammy winning guitarist Zakk Wylde and his band Black Label Society (BLS) are preparing to release their new studio album Shot To Hell on September 12th. The buzz is already starting to build dramatically as the September 12th release date approaches.

In June, Zakk appeared on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine and he's on the cover of the September 2006 issues of Guitar World and Metal Edge Magazines. Radio is hotly anticipating the July 24th add date of the first single off Shot to Hell, which is "Concrete Jungle." Shot To Hell is the follow up to Mafia, which debuted in March 2005 at #15 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart and at #1 on the Top Independent Albums chart and # 15 on the Top Internet Releases. Zakk is Guitar World Magazine's 3 time reigning MVP who in their year end readers poll was named #1 most valuable player, #1 best metal guitarist and #1 best shredder. In addition he was the recipient of Metal Hammer Magazine's 2005 'Riff Lord' Golden God Award.

‘Shot to Hell’ the new Black Label Society album, Produced by Zakk Wylde and Michael Beinhorn (Ozzy, Korn, Soundgarden), and recorded with longtime pals Craig Nunenmacher (drums) and John "J.D." DeServio (bass), "Shot to Hell" takes the ferocious hard rock of such BLS albums as 2003's "Blessed Hellride" and 2005's "Mafia" to a whole new level of "brewtality." “I never run out of ideas’ Zakk says. "We just came in here and started knocking it out. That's how you make records." That take-no-prisoners attitude is all over such snarling tracks as "Concrete Jungle", "Blood Is Thicker Than Water" and "Give Yourself To Me", while reflective ballads like "Lead Me To Your Door" and "Sick Of It All" mix moody melodies with screaming guitar solos and are Wylde’s best to date. "It's a real cool mix of heavy shit and mellow shit," Zakk explains. ‘Shot to Hell’ is Black Label Society’s defining moment – this is the album that will shoot them to World Dominance!

Mighty Doom icons CATHEDRAL from Coventry, England for sure are one of the most unique and unpredictable acts around. These legendary merchants of slow-motion sound could care less about redundant genre restrictions and have so far incorporated everything from Doom, Psych, Folk up to Funk in their works.

With their eighth album „The Garden Of Unearthly Delights“ CATHEDRAL have achieved much more than simply living up to that reputation – the guys created timeless songs that couldn`t be farther away from standardisation, stagnation and convention.

Produced by Warren Ryker (DOWN, CROWBAR), „The Garden Of Unearthly Delights“ is probably the most varied effort of the band so far. While a song like ’North Berwick Witch Trials’ will bring back memories of such immortal riffs`n`groove as in ’Hopkins’ or ’Ride’, ’Tree Of Life And Death’ simply tears everything to pieces with its ultra-heavy guitar sound and fierce vocals courtesy of Lee Dorrian. The centerpiece of it all certainly is the 27-minute-long mammoth epos ’The Garden’ that almost bursts with such a wealth of ideas and changes in atmosphere that other bands probably couldn`t come up with on a whole album.

Using every stylistic device from female vocals up to violins and embedding it all in that typical CATHEDRAL brand of Doom, „The Garden Of Unearthly Delights“ is a treat for every fan of the band, old and new alike.

Starting with quite sinister and ultra-slow songs on the 1990 EP „In Memorium“ and the full-length album „Forest Of Equilibrium“, CATHEDRAL quickly gained cult status. The 1992 follow-up EP „Soul Sacrifice“ brought changes soundwise and saw the band mixing traditional Doom with 70s – Hardrock and showed a first glimpse of the trademarks CATHEDRAL still represent nowadays. After having previously toured with MORBID ANGEL and SAINT VITUS, the band embarked on the legendary „Gods Of Grind“ – Tour with ENTOMBED, CARCASS and CONFESSOR. „The Ethereal Mirror“ featured alltime faves like ’Ride’ and ’Midnight Mountain’ and suddenly gave CATHEDRAL the reputation as „the next big thing in Metal“. Struggling with this label, the band started to experiment on the EP „Statik Majik“ and probably tried out every single instrument they could lay their hands on to churn out a 20-minute-track like ’Voyage Of The Homeless Sapien’. After touring with BLACK SABBATH, the guys went on to record the landmark „The Carnival Bizarre“ in 1996 that brought us immortal tunes such as ’Hopkins (The Witchfinder General)’ and ’Utopian Blaster’ – the latter featuring Tony Iommi on guitar. „Supernatural Birth Machine“ was released in 1996 after touring in South America, Europe and Japan amongst others. The catchy songwriting on that album echoed on „Caravan Beyond Redemption“ in 1998, but with a heavier twist to it. The next serious change in style occurred on the gloomy and sludgy „Endtyme“ that went almost completely without sound experiments and concentrated on ultra-grim riffing. 2002`s „The VIIth Coming“ combined catchiness with heaviness to form a well-balanced mixture between old and new CATHEDRAL. Now that the English fourpiece has returned with „The Garden Of Unearthly Delights“ it`s time to follow them for new adventures in sound…

There’s an obscure Chinese proverb that roughly translates as “There is one thing greater than money and power: Enthusiasm.” While some of the more cynical bastards in the world would dismiss that statement as some kind of hollow fortune-cookie philosophy, that lesson is something the Cleveland-based metal outfit Chimaira have taken to heart.

With four records and a decade of service in the trenches behind them, the band have created The Infection, their second release for Nuclear Blast and their most ambitious recording yet. Sounds like typical record-company bio nonsense, right? Doesn’t every band tell you that their latest release surpasses everything they’ve done up to this point? How many times have you heard the words “maturing” or “progressing” as a rationale to deliver a crap album?

For their fifth album, Chimaira didn’t have any brushes with death, rehab memories or dalliances in musical genres that have nothing to do with “the rock” as we know it. Sounds crazy, but the truth is that the band have come around full circle, returning to the headspace that brought them together in the first place. “Every album we’ve ever made has a back-story that made the creation of that album a pain in the ass,” says Mark Hunter about his band’s evolution. “When we made our first album, we were thrown into the studio for two months with a huge budget, a big producer and no songs. We just rushed through it. When we got the record back, we thought, ‘this is not what we signed up for.’ When it came to do the next record, we felt like we had something to prove, so we were purposely writing songs that just put up a huge middle finger to everybody that steered us in the wrong direction.

Andols had quit, and for the third album, I hardly showed up to work on it. I’m usually working 12 hours a day in the studio; I went in, and did all my songs in four days and left. We got off of Roadrunner, got our old drummer back and signed to Nuclear Blast. Now people are questioning our stability and we’re thinking we have to make the best record we’ve ever done because it could be the last one. The touring cycle for Resurrection went well and we made tons of new fans. “ So it’s time to write the next album,” he continues. “We’re happy! Everything’s stable. So where’s the drama? How are we going to make an album? So we went back and did what we did 10 years ago—we went back to jamming. We just had fun.” This might be the only time you see the words “fun and “infection” in the same sentence, but we’re talking about a bunch of metal lifers from the not-quite Midwest doing what brings them joy.

The title of the new album implies multiple meanings: Instead of writing down lyrics, Hunter freestyled the words live in the studio, finding inspiration in favorite movies and revisiting moments in his life where he was in a dark place emotionally, “doing things I would never do. My cure was getting it out of my system. I grew up listening to records that got that across. Alice In Chains would have lyrics that would hit you in the gut and make you think, ‘I feel just like that.’ The second meaning is the amount of “infectious riffs that’ll get stuck in your head,” while the third focuses on the disc title. The band recently launched spread-the-infection.com as a site where fans can download various icons, avatars and stencils of the cover art as a way of “spreading the infection” prior to the disc’s April 24th release.

Team Chimaira’s fifth release isn’t for the faint of heart—or the casual heavy music fan. Produced by longtime producer Ben Schigel and mixed by the mighty Zeuss (Hatebreed, Shadows Fall), every downstroke feels like a bludgeon to the face, every snare hit a pistol shot to the chest. Topped off with Spicuzza’s dark electronics and Hunter’s this-means-war growl, The Infection clearly finds the band at the top of their powers. Hunter meets Herrick beat-for-beat on “Frozen In Time” for maximum in-tandem propulsion. “Coming Alive” is the aural equivalent of cracking open a crypt to find some real horror inside gritty processed guitars and Hunter’s roofing nails-n-molasses growl. The chiming guitar figure and textured keyboards in the introduction to “Secrets Of The Dead” create a feeling of dread while maintaining intensity. Charging riffs and noise-saturated harmonics conjure a steel-cage match between power-masters Pantera and doom-merchants Godflesh on “The Disappearing Sun.”

In addition to being Hunter’s favorite track on the album, “Impending Doom” proves that you can effectively convey menace with both a whisper and a scream. “On Broken Glass” is the soundtrack for a circle pit in a burning ballroom, with Andols’ precision time-keeping sounding more like an assault rifle than an actual drum kit. The shapeshifting “Destroy And Dominate” is downright punishing, with cinematic sonic discovery and time changes as tight as a mosquito’s ass. (Hunter describes the track as “being dragged through the mud with a 700-pound dude on top of you.”) The near 15-minute closing instrumental, “The Heart Of It All” offers prog-rock musicianship but not at the expense of an emotional core. (“Technical skill is good,” reminds Hunter. “but I don’t want to ‘count’ my music—I want to feel it.”) Given the amount of sonic territory The Infection covers, the band’s power and vision remain consistent. While the individual members will pledge allegiance to disparate-sounding bands ranging from Carcass, Slayer and Nine Inch Nails, the commonality they share is 100-percent Chimaira, a chemistry not lost on Hunter. That’s why when a waitress at a truck stop asks him what kind of music he plays, the singer says “metal” like it’s a badge of honor. “I think you can alienate people if you’re linked to a particular genre,” Hunter says. “We’re not in the death-metal scene, we’re not in the hardcore scene. I just tell people we’re metal, because that gives us carte blanche to do what we want. I’m glad we’re not some hip, scene-centered band, because we can make the decisions we want to make and not worry about backlash. Our fans have always come along for the ride with us, and we feel really blessed in that regard.” If Chimaira didn’t hold back anything for the making of The Infection, it’s obvious they sure as hell aren’t going to phone it in onstage. Don’t invite the members to any weddings, birthday parties or new bar openings this year: The band’s 2009 is slammed with a relentless touring campaign beginning with a slot supporting Disturbed this spring, followed by trips to Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In addition, the band will visit Russia for the first time, and are also looking forward to appearing at the Desert Rock Festival in Dubai. With a decade of service to the metal masses behind them, Chimaira are embracing their future with an unwavering enthusiasm. Consider the number of bands who lose the plot entirely by making oh-so-grand “art statements” or stay together to rehash pale imitations of their glory days simply because they can’t do anything else. As a music fan, Hunter is well aware of the traps his heroes have fallen into, and instead of slapping the backs of his bandmates in a self-congratulatory mode, Hunter gives the credit to the people who encourage him: the fans. “ You can’t make a fly-by-night record anymore,” the singer warns. “As a musician you need to work your ass off; otherwise, your fans will see right through it. I am proud to say that as I speak, there is no bullshit on The Infection. It’s as honest as we’ve ever been.” Introducing The Infection: Ten doses of intensity and integrity to cleanse you of all the festering mediocrity happening in music today.

Roll up your sleeves, because this is going to leave a mark…

Meshuggah: Catch Thirty Three $19.95

"One of the ten most important hard and heavy bands“ that’s how the prestigious Rolling Stone Magazine describes Swedish sonic extremists MESHUGGAH.

It is impossible to talk about experimental or avant-garde metal without mentioning this truly groundbreaking act: MESHUGGAH mix ultra-complicated rhythmic patterns with massive riffs and aggressive growls, combining Death Metal, Grindcore, Mathcore, Thrash and Progressive Metal to create their unique style. Trying to categorize MESHUGGAH? Think again… Manic low-tuned riffs repeated in seemingly endless loops, desperate and aggressive growls and screams, and drum fills and patterns from another dimension – these are some of the traits of character of „Catch Thirty-Three“, MESHUGGAH`S latest attack on the central nervous system.

Nobody could ever compare MESHUGGAH`S music to a walk in the park – a slaughter in the park is more of a fitting comparison! A perfect example for this fine piece of Swedish madness is the opening track “Autonomy Lost“: without caring for things like intros, a slow start or other niceties, MESHUGGAH immediately deliver exactly their full-tilt blaze of brutality and insanity! Using programmed drums for the first time in their career, MESHUGGAH`S sound hasn’t weakened a single bit – if possible, it has even gained more aggression while coming across with an harsher and colder edge. Combining sinister and disturbing interludes with the sheer riff-massacre of tracks like „Shed“, „Catch Thirty-Three“ and its bitter lyrical concept is food for seriously disturbing pictures in your head. „Like the way you would watch a movie“, MESHUGGAH recommend to perceive their new body of work. It has been a long, long way for MESHUGGAH from their first steps into the world of all things audibly sick and twisted with their 1989 vinyl-only release "Psykisk Testbild“ (now a highly sought-after gem for MESHUGGAH fans) up to their latest bone-crushing release, "Catch Thirty-Three“. In 1991, a broader audience took notice of a monster called MESHUGGAH when the self-titled debut mini-LP was released, shortly after followed by debut album "Contradictions Collapse“. "None“ and the classic EP "Selfcaged“ were next, but it wasn`t until 1995 and MESHUGGAH`S masterpiece album "Destroy Erase Improve“ that almost the whole metal scene stood up in amazement and faced this incredible new force coming from Sweden. "Chaosphere“ saw the band touring with Thrash Metal gods SLAYER in America and further established MESHUGGAH`S status as „next big thing“. After the release of the rarities and demo collection "Rare Trax“, the band returned to America in support of their album "Nothing“ this time playing in front of stunned "Ozzfest“ crowds. Needless to say – MESHUGGAH had conquered the U.S., just like they had conquered Europe before.

Fresh off destroying Soundwave the mighty MESHUGGAH are back with the best offering yet ‘Koloss’
While everything is pretty much rushed these days, some bands need, or better, take their time to come up with an new album. MESHUGGAH is one of these bands and you always know it was worth the wait once you listen to a new MESHUGGAH record for the first time. Also no wonder, it takes some time and effort to come up with what got known as math metal – right? A genre and a trademark, Tomas Haake & Co. invented!
2012 still showcases MESHUGGAH on top of the game that has been extended, renamed and what not by a whole lot of new bands, that try to reach out to the godfathers of math, jazz, djent or whatever-you-wanna-call-it metal, might come close, but never will deliver as these Swedes do for more than 20 years now.

Meshuggah: Obzen $19.95

Easily one of the most scarily gifted bands in metal, Sweden's precise, devastating Meshuggah has returned with another set of explorations into carefully controlled mayhem.

OBZEN continues their seemingly robotic mastery of complex, polyrhythmic thrash so expertly delivered it's unthinkable that it came from mere humans. The album's monochromatic austerity casts Meshuggah's metallic adventures in grim, grey light, as unfeeling and chilly as a morgue drawer. It's a vision of jazz pushed to its mathematical extreme and ruthlessly robbed of its vibrant color. What's left is a steel-hard reduction of angles and equations, and oppressive epics such as "Electric Red" and the disorienting "Pravus" flay like spinning razors. OBZEN'S inevitable approach cannot be stopped, and the band's groove is locked in tight enough to provide a locomotion that moves mountains.

If ever music was to be accurately described as "heavy metal", Meshuggah's is it.

Classical-come-apocalyptic; violently energetic yet melodiously beautiful, "Deflorate" sees the songwriting of band leader and rhythm guitarist Brian Eschbach at its most developed and refined, exponentially complimented by contributions from both bass savant Bart Williams and newcomer guitarist/shred lord Ryan Knight (ex - Arsis), whose leads are destined to dazzle fans and take the band's punishing potency to dramatic new heights. Combined with the intense performances of uniquely charismatic howler/growler Trevor Strnad and rising extreme drumming star Shannon Lucas, the cannon of talent possessed by The Black Dahlia Murder is more stacked to destroy than ever! The Black Dahlia Murder has not surrendered their knack for writing compact, catchy death metal madness, and "Deflorate" is by no means an exception to the bands rule of 'all killer and no filler'... no punches are pulled, no gravestone is left unturned!

The often imitated yet never duplicated Detroit deathsters The Black Dahlia Murder (TBDM) are back with their 5th full-length album, the death metal opus ‘RITUAL’; a collection of 12 searing tracks that see the band staying true to their sound and style while progressing in both writing and musicianship. Guitarist Ryan Knight has delivered truly searing leads that will without a doubt daze and lay waste the ears of both loyal Black Dahlia diehards and burgeoning fans alike.
The face-melting quintet has made a career out of being unpredictable -- as well as unhinged, unclassifiable and unrepentant, all in the best possible ways. But with ‘RITUAL’, its fifth full-length album, the extreme metal troupe found fertile territory in the wide world of those prescribed practices that would seem verboten to a band that's always marched to the double-time beat of its own drummer. And in doing so it's come up with what frontman Trevor Strnad considers "the most focused Black Dahlia Murder strike of all time." Touring Australia in June!
